Description
Messerschmitt Bf109H/F, HistoryThe Messerschmitt Bf 109, commonly called the Me 109 (most often by Allied aircrew andeven amongst the German aces themselves, even though this was not the official Germandesignation), is a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt andRobert Lusser during the early to mid-1930s.The “Bf 109” designation was issued by theGerman ministry of aviation and represents the developing company Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (at which the engineer Messerschmitt led the development of the plane) and arather arbitrary figure. It was one of the first truly modern fighters of the era, including suchfeatures as all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landinggear. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engine. The Bf 109 first saw operational service during the Spanish Civil War and was still in serviceat the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II, during which time it was the backboneof the Luftwaffe’s fighter force. From the end of 1941, the Bf 109 was steadily being supplemented by the superior Focke-Wulf Fw 190.The Bf 109 was flown by the three top-scoring German fighter aces of World War II, whoclaimed 928 victories among them while flying with Jagdgeschwader 52, mainly on theEastern Front. The highest scoring fighter ace of all time, Erich Hartmann of Germany, flewthe Bf 109 and was credited with 352 victories (and also survived the war).H variant (bigger wings):The Bf 109H was intended to be a high-altitude fighter, developed from the F-series. Thewingspan was increased through the addition of new, constant-chord inner wing panelsto 11.92 m (39.11 ft), and the widened stabilizer again received a supporting strut leadingfrom the fuselage, like the B through E models. Maximum speed was 750 km/h (470 mph) at10,100 m (33,140 ft).[citation needed][clarification needed] A small number of Bf 109 H-1swere built, flying several sorties over Britain and France.F variant (smaller wings):Development of the new Bf 109 F airframe had begun in 1939. After February 1940, animproved engine, the Daimler-Benz DB 601E, was developed for use with the Bf 109. Theengineers at the Messerschmitt facilities took two Bf 109 E-1 airframes and installed thisnew powerplant. The fuselage was cleaned up and the engine cowling modified to improveaerodynamics.
