Description
This is a Byron's Original P51 Model Airplane partially assembled. Local pickup only, I have been working on for six years. I probably don't have the skill to fly it and need the space. Please read the following as it is a very complicated airplane.The wingspan is 86 inches. They are foam with epoxy glass covering. The brown is the filler showing through the glass. The wings still need servos installed, more covering, sanding and painting. The tail surfaces are monokote over foam with a thin coat of epoxy for smoothing and further surface prep. The fuselage has one coat of silver paint just to see during sanding.
It has the original pneumatic main gear. A soda bottle is used for pressure which works better with a larger volume. The fill port is under one of the inside wing tips.
The original design used push rods to the tail. Instead the tail assembly is my own design with pull pull wires on elevator and rudder. Tail retract is a standard small retract servo.
The inner doors are kind of rough and could be done better.The gear sequencer is an Arduino nano. Code is in C. I am unhappy with the ability of the gear sequencer to handle voltage drops when a servo starts. If inner doors are not used it would be much simpler.
Instead of the older quadra, it has a DLE55RA with 2 degree down thrust, 2 degree right thrust. I made the spinner and back plate. It can be fit with a standard 5 1/2 inch spinner. The ignition module, cutoff, and ignition batteries sit behind and above the engine. I built a copy of the engine cowling but with larger engine head clearance. I didn't want to loose the original pattern and with a fully cowled engine I thought it would be better to start with it oversize a little. Neither cowl has been cut for engine exhaust or cooling air exhaust.
It uses two 5 cell NiMh batter packs with separate switches and charge ports under the wings. There are dropping diodes in the gear sequencer for the lower voltage gear servos. The receiver is a Lemon dual diversity for use with a Spektrum radio. The receiver is included, the transmitter is not.
Many 3D parts are used. All CAD files are in OpenSCAD. The original plans and C code for the gear sequencer are included.
The things shown in the photos are included including engine, prop, spinner, spinner drill guide, wires and frame to hold it while working on it. I got the ignition module on eBay and would recommend replacing it.
