Description
This vintage volume is "Georgia Railroad and Controlled Lines, Rules for the government of the transportation department and superseding all existing orders or instruction inconsistent therewith'' and published in Augusta, Ga., by Chronicle Job Printing, railroad printers in 1905-1906.The hardcover volume measures 4 by 6 1/4 inches and contains 113 pages plus additional pages of diagrams illustrating the manner of using signals. There also is a foldout diagram showing how to load lumber on two or more cars. The boards are black cloth with gilt lettering on the front. The boards show age and use wear, compromised cloth and some cloth loss at the spine edge and heel. Affixed inside the front board is a form with unfilled blanks for the name of the employee, his job title and date. It designated this as Book of Rules number 1086 for the government of the Transportation and Telegraph Department, with unfilled blanks for the name of the station and date with the year as 190-. The hinges are weak -- the front more than the rear -- and the pages are somewhat age-toned, but otherwise the volume is in good shape.
Laid in is a form dated 1958 and signed by assistant superintendent F.E. Morgan acknowledging that he had received a book of Rules of Operating Department and agreed to return the book when called for or upon leaving the railroad's employment, and to not allow the book to leave his possession. Also laid is in a handwritten note allowing the holder to pass trains in certain circumstance and a handwritten note that engine 1035 worked extra from 10:35 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. on both trains between Atlanta and Lithonia protecting against second and third-class trains not protecting against extra trains.
